# Will I be able to prescribe medical cannabis as a nurse?

## Medical cannabis is not FDA-approved, so it isn't prescribed. APRNs with prescriptive authority may be able to recommend or certify patients depending on their state.

Medical cannabis is not an FDA-approved drug, so it is not prescribed. If you are an Advanced Practice Nurse with current prescriptive authority, you may be able to recommend medical cannabis (or certify patients to use it) depending on your jurisdiction. Verify this with your state board of nursing or certifying body before registering. You can also review [state medical cannabis laws](https://www.ncsl.org/health/state-medical-cannabis-laws).

Scope and prescriptive authority for cannabis vary widely by state and are evolving. Always confirm what your license allows with your state board of nursing before advising patients.
